Item description from seller

Two official guides detailing plans and regulations for moving pedestrians and vehicles safely around Mecca and its environs during the Hajj of 1404AH (1984). Coinciding with the GCC's Traffic Week, they also present a valuable record of urban planning in response to rising visitor numbers prior to the 2nd Great Expansion of the Masjid al-Haram. Recent efforts had included widening its Mataf area in 1979 with Haswas (pathways) and remaining structures around the Kaaba largely removed, adapting Tent Cities at Arafat and Mina (Rasch 1980), and new roads and tunnels. (1) IN GOD'S CARE: Original colour illustrated wraps 14x21cm. 128pp Arabic text with numerous royal and official portraits, colour photos, safety drawings, and map. Wraps good, marked, and rubbed to the extremities, interiors very good. Issued by the Mecca Traffic Department, this was prepared by First Lieutenant Abdul Fattah Jaizani, supervised by Lieutenant Colonel Yahya Surour Al-Zaidi for the Gulf Cooperation Council's Traffic Week, held 27 Rajab 1404 (28 April 1984) to unify regional goals, promote awareness, and protect children and students (p88). This contains notices by several officials and academics about the importance of regulations, child and student safety (locating Meccan schools), traffic police, accidents, injuries, looking after one's back and emotional state, navigating narrow streets etc, with poems in appreciation of the traffic police by local poets. // (2) HAJJ TRAFFIC INSTRUCTIONS: Landscape wraps colour illustrated with pilgrims at Arafat 25x17cm. 100pp Arabic text including 12 full-page colour Traffic Department maps. Very good with minor loss to spine tail. This opens with a reassuring statement by Public Security Director Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al Sheikh. Seven chapters detail plans (dates, times, directions, special instructions) for each stage: Mecca and environs including ascent and descent of Arafat, entering and exiting the Haram area, tunnels, and Tawaf; Ascent from Mina to Arafat and descent from Muzdalifah and Arafat; Ascent from Arafat to Muzdalifah and descent; Ascent and descent of Arafat; Hajj Route Plan for Arafat focusing on the wider external road network; instructions for buses and small cars; and general instructions.
