Item description from seller

[4], 90pp, [2]. With a final leaf of publisher's advertisements. Disbound. Stab-stich holes to gutter, short closed tear to head of title page, else a clean and crisp copy. A revised and extended edition of the first published work (initially titled A Defence of the reasonableness of Prayer) of Presbyterian minister and theologian George Benson (1699-1762); an inquiry into 'the end and design of prayer: or the reasonableness of praying to an unchangeably wise, powerful, and good God', written in response to 'objections raised of the late Earl of Rochester Mr Blount and other modern Deists'. Benson demonstrates that prayer is a natural expression of our sense of the providence of God and concern for moral improvement, and is thus a rational exercise for the mind that remains beneficial to the individual even if the expectation of procuring a favour from the Lord is not met. The second letter concerns the language of the scriptures regarding the doctrine of predestination. ESTC T13546. Size: 8vo. …

Store description

Established 2007, Antiquates Ltd is an Antiquarian bookseller with a large, custom built shop in the heart of the Dorset countryside. We sell fine and rare books from our Wareham shop, in catalogues, and via our website (www.antiquates.co.uk). Specialising in early printed books both English and Continental, fine English Literature, and books by, for, and about Women and Children, we nevertheless stock a wide range of works on paper from 1500-present - including modern first editions. Our bias is towards the unusual, the interesting and the important - and always have a good stock of rare books by local authors such as T.E. Lawrence and Thomas Hardy; we are just the place if you're looking for an extra-special gift for a wedding, birthday, anniversary or graduation. (Open Wednesday - Saturday, 10am-4pm)…
