About this Item
Two 1/6 plate tintypes. Examined out of the mats with no obvious identification. Circa 1865-1870. One image of a woman seated in a dress, with a touch of gold tinting on the brooch at her neck; the second image of a man seated with a jacket, tie, and hat. Original matching brass mats. The image of the woman is deep, rich, and near fine, with brass mat, protector, glass, and one-half of a contemporary figured leather over wood case present. The image of the man has some modest rubbing in the background and is very good, with identical brass mat and protector, and glass, but separated from its original case, which is lacking. Tintypes of African-Americans, while not objectively rare, are becoming much sought after, and it is very unusual to find matched tintypes of a Black couple. Seller Inventory # 563481
