Print on Demand. This book offers a unique glimpse into the lives of two young men, Allen and Kirk McCurdy, who volunteered to fight with the Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. Through their personal letters to their father, we gain intimate insight into the daily realities of this pivotal historical moment. The letters, written with a raw honesty and immediacy, detail the brothersââ ⢠training, the harrowing journey to Cuba, and the grueling battles that defined their experience. We see the fear and excitement they felt as they faced combat, the hardships they endured, and the deep love and devotion they shared for their family. The author provides a poignant context for these letters, highlighting the national fervor that swept America in the wake of the sinking of the Maine and the powerful spirit of patriotism that inspired countless young men to enlist. Beyond the vivid descriptions of war, the letters offer a moving testament to the enduring power of family bonds, courage in the face of adversity, and the enduring ideals that fueled a nation's fight for freedom. The book serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war, as well as the strength and resilience of the human spirit in the face of hardship. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. …

- Biography and Autobiography
It was not difficult to raise a sufficient army; the trouble was in rejecting and dooming to dis appointment hundreds of the manliest, sturdy warriors the world has ever seen. Colonel Roose velt could have raised a brigade or even a division, but he was only allowed a regiment, which was fortunately enlarged from seven hundred and eighty to one thousand, giving a number of eager volunteers from the various colleges and high walks of life an opportunity to fight beside the southwestern regiments, who were men accustomed to hard service and a rough, out-door life.
