Despite being conjoined twins with one heart between them, Deirdre and Desdemona Gardner lived perfectly ordinary lives until they turned fourteen, when strange clicking noises in the night and a string of missing girls turned their quiet existence into a waking nightmare.

In the wake of an unspeakable tragedy, the twins spent a summer away from home, visiting a small Louisiana town with a dark history of murder, unsolved disappearances, and lynching – all centered around two figures fascinating to Deirdre: Florence and Sage Labelle, conjoined twins, alligator farm heiresses, and suspected serial killers.

With the help of Florence's diary and a mysterious little girl whose uncannily adult mannerisms, antiquated vocabulary, and extensive knowledge of her town's history set Desdemona on edge, the Gardner twins set out to solve a decades-old murder mystery while struggling to cope with their own traumatic past.

Following a semi-successful separation surgery, the surviving twin, wishing to remain anonymous, invites you to read this, her life story.
