Following the devastating stillbirth of their daughter, Clara, architect and risk analyst Bernie Miller and his wife, Clara, flee the suffocating condolences of the city for the remote sanctuary of Blackwood Lane. Nestled deep within a freezing Pennsylvania hollow, the imposing, three-story Victorian estate promises an unblemished beginning-a sixty-acre refuge where silence is meant to heal. To Bernie, the estate is an engineering problem with an acceptable margin of error, a historic structure whose sound hemlock framing and native fieldstone footings can be shored up with math and manual labor. But Clara immediately senses that the house is not merely empty; it is waiting. Beneath the scent of unslaked lime and aged beeswax, the rooms hold a suffocating, pressurized cold that does not belong to winter, and in the dust of the grand foyer, fresh, unmade trails appear where no living feet have walked.
As December settles over the ridge, the house begins to feed. Every technical rationalization Bernie offers-every barometric draft, every foundation settlement, every phantom acoustic artifact he attributes to abandoned coal spurs and shifting limestone-only charges the estate's ungrounded wiring with volatile kinetic force. The house is an acoustic and electromagnetic battery, an architectural mirror that converts the couple's unspoken grief, weaponized silence, and mutual blame into violent physical manifestations. When light fixtures detonate in showers of molten brass and phantom footprints of river silt creep across their bedroom floor, Bernie and Clara construct a desperate, physical barricade: bolting a four-hundred-pound oak bookcase and structural plywood over the north wing to wall off the nursery they cannot bear to acknowledge. But their fortress of denial becomes an iron trap, replaying their own bitter arguments back to them through the lath and drawing forward the lingering ghosts of Alex and Eleanor Jameson-a previous couple who lost a child and died thirty years earlier in the very same rooms.
With the mountain road locked in ice and the telephone lines severed, the couple is trapped inside an escalating induction loop where every unspoken truth becomes an electrical surge and every retreat into silence plunges the rooms below freezing. When the community support group at Grace Episcopal and Dr. Alan Jameson-a clinical researcher in anomalous mechanics-attempt to intervene, they discover that Blackwood Lane cannot be cleansed by traditional rites or hammers. The house is an overloaded circuit, and Bernie and Clara are the live current keeping the filaments white-hot. To survive the catastrophic convergence of the house's seventy-ton load, Bernie must dismantle the fortress of spreadsheets and pride that has kept his heart frozen, while Clara must find the voice to confront their shared loss. If they cannot bridge the chasm between them and speak the name of their dead daughter, the house will close the circuit through their living flesh, burying them beneath the stone in a tomb of their own making.
