About this Item
No date, but circa 1942, n.p., but Cornell University Department of Geology embossed stamp to first page (Ithica, NY), 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 hardbound, marbled paper-covered boards over tan cloth spine, hand-written title to spine, typewritten index. A bound collection of 22 original works by the well respected geologist Charles Rollin Keyes (1864-1942), which includes a 1909 partial bibliography of his works. All are original publications or extracts from scientific journals. Many have O.U. (Oklahoma University) Geology Department Stamps, Keyes' name or other identifying marks written on the covers or title pages of the publications. The hardbound covers are rubbed, mildly bumped and edgeworn, and there is a crack between the rear endpaper and pastedown, but the binding is quite solid. Altogether, a very good original compilation of these scarce works by an eminent geologist. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~WWW~ An 1887 graduate of the State University of Iowa, Keyes earned a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1892. He served as assistant state geologist of Iowa, director of the Bureau of Geology and Mines of Missouri and was president of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology at Socorro. Keyes was also an avid ornithologist, publishing the first detailed listing of birds in Iowa in 1889. In 1918 he was the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Iowa, losing to William S. Kenyon. This compilation of his journal articles - all original issue rather than copies - includes many articles from The Pan-American Geologist, a monthly journal 'devoted to speculative geology, constructive geological criticism and geological record' Keyes edited for a number of years. A partial list of titles in this original collection: Diverse Origins and Diverse Times of Formation of the Lead and Zinc Deposits of the Mississippi Valley; Orotaxial Significance of Certain Unconformities; Syllabus of Lectures on Geologic Processes and Geographic Products in Arid Regions; Chart of the Geologic Terranes of Iowa; Scheme of the Stratigraphic Succession in Misssouri; Conspectuc of the Geologic Formations of New Mexico; Sequence of Rock Formations in Kansas; Terrainal Differentiation of the Paleozoic Succession; Extent and Age of the Cap-au-Gres Fault; Continental Perspective of American Pre-Cambrian Stratigraphy; Iowa's Great Period of Mountain-Making; Certain Features of Eolic Gradation; High-Level Terraces of Okanogan Valley, Washington; Blister Hypothesis of Laccolithic Mountains; Isostatic Theory and Applied Geology; New Mexican Laccolithic Structures; Geological Work of R.
