About this Item
Self-wraps 19x28cm with title panel and illustration to the front. A complete issue of the weekly Saturday Magazine, pp153-160, illustrated. Very good, tanned, disbound from a larger volume. The cover story was issued as part of a series on "the more southern towns" of the Ottoman Empire, that also included Antioch and Medina. Falling between visits by Burckhardt and Burton, unfortunately no author is named, but it draws on information provided by an unnamed traveller, and Ali Bey. It begins with a description of its geography and climate, markets, access to water, a surprising lack of dogs, insects and vermin, the melancholy appearance of the people, the life of the Prophet. It is undefended by walls, and the population rapidly diminishing with buildings falling into ruin. There is a detailed description of the Kaaba and Great Mosque. Other content includes an extract from Forbes on Ceylon, the vegetable butter of Africa, and Dr Thomas Young's memoir. Seller Inventory # 4984
