Rutgers University, 1970.
America is divided by war, protest, civil rights, changing sexual politics and a generation questioning nearly everything it has been told to believe. On campus, those national tensions become personal.
Danny Watkins is a student journalist for The Daily Targum, trying to prove himself at a time when the world around him seems to be coming apart. But his editor, Jim Morris, doubts Danny’s ability and keeps assigning him stories that do not match his ambition. When an important assignment goes wrong, Danny loses his place at the newspaper — and his scholarship.
With his future suddenly at risk, Danny makes one desperate move: recruit controversial activist Abbie Hoffman to speak at Rutgers. If he succeeds, he may save his college career. If he fails, he could be forced to leave school and face the draft during one of the most unpopular wars in American history.
Turbulence: Dispatches from the Student Protest Movement, Rutgers 1970 is a coming-of-age novel set during a defining moment in American campus life, when peace, love, war and rebellion collided — and students had to decide who they were becoming.
