1919: Major Brendan Archer, released from the English Army after the end of World War I, travels to the Irish East Coast to marry his fiancée. The reunion with the daughter of the owner of the hotel Majestic is completely different than hoped, especially since the fiancée dies soon after. In the meantime, however, the major has already settled on the remaining flock of cats, whimsical servants and residents and is drawn deeper into the suction of the huge former magnificent hotel and its rumbling owner Edward Spencer. The brilliant, absurd humor narrative plays against the backdrop of Ireland's crucial years on the way to dividing the country. The inexhaustible facets of this centuries-old conflict are reflected in the different points of view of the very lifelike characters. Posthumously awarded the Man Booker Prize, now offers the German reader the opportunity to encounter a consummate stylist and great narrator.
