Item description from seller
RARE ILLEGAL PIRATED / BOOTLEG COPY. No title page, no publication details, no date (circa 1961). There is no quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson preceding text. The text merely begins at page 1, following a single leaf as ffep (with additional single blank endpaper leaf at rear). Considering this title was initially banned in the USA, this appears to be a pirated/bootleg copy, illegally printed, & bound in plain dark blue printed wraps. This title was first published in 1934 by Obelisk Press in Paris. Tropic of Cancer wasn't officially published in the United States until 1961, & the publication of it led to a series of obscenity trials that tested American laws on pornography. Early editions were smuggled into the United States. This copy is possibly a Taiwanese piracy, which was a photo-offset of the Grove Press First Edition. It is NOT one of the Medusa reprints, which was a copyright-infringing pirated edition published in Mexico (states New York) in 1940 by Jacob Brussel, who ended up in prison for three years for publishing pornography. Bound in plain dark blue wraps with blue lettering on white background to front cover ("Henry Miller - Tropic of Cancer - This is the complete unexpurgated Grove Press edition originally published - [with date left blank]"), no lettering to spine, with six printed quotes to rear cover (1961 reviews from the Minneapolis Sunday Tribune, Ben Ray Redman at Saturday Review, Lawrence Durrell, Leslie Cross at Milwaukee Journal, Fred Shaw at Miami News, & Harry T. Moore at N.Y. Times Book Review). Handling wear, shelfwear, otherwise a nice clean tight solid softcover copy of a scarce early edition. 287pp. RARE illegal pirated copy.…
