Item description from seller

A smartly bound new edition of this illustrated study on the development of steam engines. New edition, revised and partly re-written. Illustrated with a frontispiece and thirty-three images, of which twenty-five are on plates. Collated complete. A detailed and comprehensive history of steam from its early history to the compound engine, with chapters on the application in manufacturing, steam tools, steam navigation, the growth of the locomotive engine, and more. Written by Henry Frith, an Irish engineer whose prolific output amounted to nearly two hundred works between translations, novels, and instructional titles. Illustrated by Sir John Gilbert, an English artist, illustrator and engraver. Previously held in the library of Francis Maurice Gustavus Du-Plat-Taylor, a British engineer for docks and land reclamation. Bound in full calf. Externally, sound with rubbing to the extremities and fading to the spine. Minor loss to the head of the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot or handling mark. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Good.
