Item description from seller

First edition. 8vo. (ii), 77, (1) pp. Original course plain paper wrappers. Trigonemetrical diagrams in the text throughout. Wear with two small losses to the spine, though the covers remain sound, very good overall. Thomas Simpson (1710–1761) was a self taught mathematician or "philomath" as they were often termed at the time. Born and raised in Leicestershire before settling in Warwickshire in his early adult life, he eventually moved to London in the 1730s. Here his mathematical talents brought him greater recognition as he began to contribute to periodicals and publish his own works. Appointed assistant to the chief master of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in 1743 and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745, he continued to write prolifically through the later years of his life and these works often went through multiple editions testifying to his importance to the subject.
