She is her planet's most powerful weapon.
He is the Altan Space Navy's best chance at controlling her.
Together they might be able to save her world.
Child Soldier. Weaponized Empath. Ruthless Soul Reader. Ten-Twenty had a name once, before she was a child of the War Machine. Now a fully trained teen, she has become a weapon, the perfect asset for defeating the last of her own rebel people. All the colonizers need to do to conquer her planet is control her, a task that gets harder as her power grows and the effect of the invaders' mind-controlling drugs diminishes.
Talented Naval Officer. Scion of Prima-Alt. Unwilling figurehead. Amad is the privileged son of an Altan religious luminary and the perfect PR face for the embattled Altan Navy. His talent and his name have launched his career beyond what most Naval Academy graduates could hope for. Now he must work with soldier Ten-Twenty to wrap up the annexation of Erenoor in short order. The problem? Ten-Twenty's mind has gotten too strong to control, a secret that tears at Amad's loyalties and leaves him scrambling to keep his mark alive without breaking Altan military protocol.
When a botched treaty offers Ten-Twenty a taste of freedom, she is forced to wield the weapon she has become. No longer the girl named Gwen who was taken from her mountain village, she finds herself ashamed of her power and how she has used it. Ten-Twenty must face her past and decide her future, even as she works to rescue the other Children of the War Machine. Returning to her patriarchal tribe as a brutal female warrior, Gwen is torn: is she the savior of her people or a symbol of their culture's demise?
As the situation on the planet devolves into chaos, Amad struggles to maintain control of Ten-Twenty's rapidly developing mind without allowing her to become aware of his influence. To fail to control her is to jettison his career in the Space Navy, and to fail is to give Ten-Twenty, this maddening girl now calling herself Gwen, a freedom that could cost her life.

Children of the War Machine Book 1: Tricklighter is a Teen & Young Adult Epic Military Space Opera. It occurs in a universe marked by Prima-Altan supremacy, political and military intrigue among many other Altan worlds, and outlying planets like the setting of this novel. Its intricately crafted plot delves into the lives, minds, and trauma of the strong female lead Gwen (soldier Ten-Twenty), and Altan Starcon Junior Grade Amadicren Sardan the Second, known to his friends as Amad and to his enemies as the son of Sardan the First.
The book has a young adult dystopian feel at times. It has political intrigue and themes of colonization. From a military perspective, it includes melee warfare on planet, as well as psychological warfare both in space and on planet, and space travel with implied warfare in space on multiple fronts. It has some clean romantic elements and includes themes about interpersonal relationships of all types. The weaponized psychic and empathic powers of the protagonist create a world rich with both internal and external action.
