Add to basketTrees (c.1920) ? Janet Harvey Kelman Thomas Nelson & Sons | ISBN: nobly non-existent | Condition: Good (honestly, not euphemistically) Purveyed by: Crappy Old Books Behold a time when learning about trees did not involve an app, a push notification, or being told to ?engage with nature? via a mindfulness subscription. Instead, you got a sturdy little book , a sharp pencil, and perhaps a stern teacher at Camden School for Girls saying, ?Now, class, identify the beech.? This is Trees by Janet Harvey Kelman, circa 1920: a small, sincere volume that takes its subject very seriously indeed, but carries about it the gentle charm of a school nature walk where everyone is slightly cold and pretending not to be bored. What?s inside the bark 32 coloured pictures ? proper plates, carefully printed, showing trees in their respectable, pre-Instagram glory. No filters, no ?aesthetic?, just beautifully earnest illustrations of trunks, branches and leaves. No ISBN ? this book predates the era when everything had to be machine-scannable. It lives in the wild west of publishing, where books simply were , and no one asked them for numbers. Ex Camden School for Girls copy ? likely handled by generations of pupils who underlined things very carefully (or not at all, depending on teacher strictness). Expect possible school stamps, old ink, and the faint echo of a long-forgotten exam question about the horse chestnut. Condition: Good ? which in old-book language means: it?s got some dignity, a bit of wear, possibly scuffed corners, perhaps a slightly shaken spine, but absolutely not on the verge of flinging its pages at the floor in despair. Why you might inexplicably need this book You secretly love trees and want to pretend you?re doing ?serious botanical study? while actually just admiring the pictures. You enjoy owning things that once belonged to a real school , because ?Ex Camden School for Girls? sounds dramatically more academic than ?bought online at 2am? You appreciate the delicious irony of a lovingly illustrated, century-old work of natural history being sold by a place called Crappy Old Books . (We?re realists, not rebranders.) This isn?t a glossy coffee-table thing for people who say ?I?m really into nature? but only go as far as their patio. This is a quiet, well-mannered classroom survivor , the sort of book that assumes you might genuinely want to know the difference between one leaf and another, and doesn?t feel the need to shout about it. The vibe Think: assembly hall, wooden desks, ink wells, and a teacher who can identify oaks at 100 yards . The illustrations have that gentle, slightly faded early 20th-century colour that suggests careful printing and none of this ?vibrancy boosted to 300%? nonsense. Each plate is a miniature portrait of a tree that almost certainly knows more about patience than you do. There are no life hacks, no quizzes to discover ?Which tree are you??, and not a single QR code. Just trees , drawn and described with calm, quietly obsessive attention. If you crave a small hit of old-fashioned scholarliness ? or you just want a book that smells faintly of library and feels like it should be opened with clean hands ? this is very much your sort of thing. Offered by Crappy Old Books , where the branding is shoddy, the stock is venerable, and the trees are still standing proudly in 32 coloured pictures .
