A village boy. A dream of distant horizons. A homeland on the brink of war.
Born and raised in the small Cypriot village of Mazouri, Antonis grows up surrounded by family, tradition, folklore and the wisdom of his beloved grandmother. From an early age, he dreams of seeing what lies beyond the mountains, but his roots keep pulling him back towards the people and place he loves.
As Antonis enters adulthood, his ambitions lead him into military service, where he faces political division, growing unrest and the difficult choices of duty. Along the way, love changes his life, friendships cross the boundaries of a divided island, and his understanding of justice, loyalty and belonging is tested.
Then, in 1974, Cyprus is plunged into war.
Caught between duty to his country and the people he loves, Antonis must navigate fear, loss and uncertainty while trying to protect those around him. As the island he calls home is torn apart, he is forced to confront a question that has followed him since childhood:
Can you chase your dreams without losing the roots that made you who you are?
The Tree with Shallow Roots: Echoes of the Past, Whispers of Tomorrow is Book One of a sweeping historical fiction series about family, love, ambition, war, displacement and the enduring search for home.
