1870. Second edition. vii, 286pp. and a 16 page publisher's catalogue. John Calvin (1509-1564) was a French theologian, pastor and reformer in Geneva during the Protestant Reformation. He was a principal figure in the development of the system of Christian theology later called Calvinism, including its doctrines of predestination and of God's absolute sovereignty in the salvation of the human soul from death and eternal damnation. His Treatise on Relics is a theological book, written in 1543 in French about the authenticity of many Christian relics. Calvin harshly criticizes the relics' authenticity, and suggests the rejection of relic worship. This edition includes an introductory dissertation by Valerian Krasinski (1795-1855), a Polish Calvinist historian and journalist. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered bevelled boards with gold titling and decoration on the spine and a gold design on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards and bumping to the spine ends.
