Item description from seller

Printed in Great Britain, at the University Press. Date on the title page. Second Edition, stated. Prefaces, Detailed Contents, Introduction, innumerable Equations, Solutions, Index; xvi, 424 pages. The pebbled dark-green cloth is very good, despite rubbed corner tips, with gilt-lettering still clear on the bumped spine. The spine is ever-so-slightly slanted. The interior leaves are subtly toned, supple, and completely clean; a number of pages still unopened. The pale-yellow endpapers bear the small armorial bookplate of William Montagu Baillie (with a boar’s head and motto 'Quid Clarius Astris'); on the half-title is an ink signature of G. H. Baillie, 1892---possibly the author of a well-known book on Watchmaking. A separate piece of paper, with some notations, is laid-in. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "In the present volume I have tried to make the discussion of the various parts of the subject, which are here given, as full as possible; and there will be found much which has hitherto not appeared except in mathematical journals. § I wish in particular to mention, as having been of great use, Boole’s Treatise and his Supplement, Moigno, Imschenetsky and Mansion; [also] Gregory, Serret, and De Morgan. Many references to original memoirs will be found in various chapters." Scattered throughout the book, are more than eight-hundred examples; Forsyth asked in the preface to the first edition that notification of any mistakes be sent to him; one assumes that these are what have been corrected in this second edition. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. All books are wrapped with special care and are shipped promptly with tracking; international sales sent via global priority, also with tracking.…

Store description

The books listed here are, indeed, from my father's library, representing the depth and varied interests of a modern scholar's mind. Dr. Henry LeRoy Finch, professor emeritus of philosophy and a published author, trained in the classics (graduating top in his class at Yale), and went on to develop an appreciation for modern thinkers. It took over half-a-century to amass this collection of primarily-scholarly books with a broad range of subjects from Philosophy and Religion (with an emphasis on the interrelationships and intricacies of Eastern and Western Thinking) to scientific influences played out over the entire history of humankind, touching necessarily on Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, Literature, History of various Cultures, Psychology, Physics, and Spiritual Thought, including Theosophy and Mysticism. Many are esoteric philosophical works, out-of-print and unavailable elsewhere. A great number cover the interconnections of so many subjects as to defy classification. His was a working library: each volume was read and familiar, its whereabouts on a shelf always known, even when "double-parked." Though many of the books are esoteric, others will appeal to the general reader, often making an abstruse subject more approachable. (There are a hundred books on Einstein alone!) In addition, there are numerous paperbacks--classics, scholarly, first-published editions, several versions of the same book (in different translations), handy for packing along in a back pocket. Each of the volumes from the collection has a bookplate tipped in at the front and may have pencil marginalia--sparse or profuse. I have tried to reflect this in all the listings, but feel free to call and discuss further details of a book's condition. As it will take a long time to write up all the descriptions, some of you may wish to call and ask about a particular book you have been seeking. Meanwhile, I'll try to keep an eye on the "Wants" list. Thank you for visiting this page. I hope my father's books will eventually find happy homes; it was one of his last wishes.…
