Original half calf with marble boards, bnding somewhat worn at edges, small paper library label on the spine, scattered light foxing and occasional off-setting from the plates. folding engraved map and 18 plates after Swinburne's sketches, 5 of them folding. Half of the plates, including one folding, were etched by Swinburne himself. Freed by a large inheritance in 1763, Swinburne spent much of his life in travelling. In the present work "an exact investigation of the soil, cultivation, government, commerce and manners of Spain, was to be the grand primary object, but what I was more confidentof my strength in, and what I own I found ore suitable to my inclinations, was the sudy of its antiquities, especially the Moorish. The travels through Spain that have appeared in print, are either old and obsolete, consequently in many respects unfit to convey a proper idea of its present state" (preface). Swinburne's publications have been commended for their 'simplicity and lack of affectation' and it has been noted that he was one of the first to 'relsih travel for its own sake'. His direct narrative is much enhanced by plates which are particularly noteworthy for the excellence and accuracy of architectural detail, half of them having been etched by Swinburne himself. . . . .
