With three large folding plates titled, "Eastern River Boat, "Commonwealth" (plates 9, 10 & 11), and three large folding plates, "Western River Boat, "Memphis" (plates 12, 13 & 14). This volume contains 22 engraved plates, plate 5 missing but never present, likely the H. M. iron clad ship 'Warrior'. The second volume of a series still in print in 1992, which includes an article by Norman S. Russell titled "On American River Steamers", pp 105 -127. Tall 4to. Original green gilt cloth covers, rebacked and recornered with tan buckram, gilt title only on front cover. Slight chipping to top and bottom cloth edges of front board; internally bright and clean.
