The fourth edition of Alexis Boyer's famed medical work, and one of his two major writings. In a lovely quarter calf binding with paper covered boards. This work was originally published in two volumes from 1814-1826. This larger, newer edition was issued later. Complete in eleven volumes. Page 364 to volume I is misnumbered 365. Illustrated, with seven plates to the fourth volume. Two plates are labelled plate III which means there are only six numbered plates. This is a comprehensive medical work, with chapters on inflammation, abscesses, gangrene, ulcers, tumors, fistula, fractures and more. The diagrams to the rear of volume IV are on fractures. In the original French. Alexis Boyer was the son of a tailor and obtained his first medical knowledge in the shop of a barber surgeon. He attracted the attention of renowned surgeons Antoine Louis and Pierre-Joseph Desault when he moved to Paris. He persevered at his profession and gained great notoriety for his anatomical knowledge and dexterity in surgery. He specialised in urological pathology, particularly disorders of micturition. Boyer was cautious and very rarely trusted new innovations in treatment. His medical works references skills and practical methods that are well practiced. Boyer's reputation and skill earned him the status of imperial family surgeon. On the fall of Napoleon Boyer's favour was still held with the succeeding sovereigns of France. In quarter calf bindings with paper covered boards. Externally, very smart. Just some minor shelfwear to the head and tails of spines. Light rubbing to the extremities. Paper to boards are lifting at the spine. Internally, all volumes are firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Heavy offsetting and patches of foxing to pages 208-227pp of volume seven. Otherwise, just some occasional scattered spots to pages. Very Good.…
