Au sortir de la chambre noire, l'image �tait d�velopp�e � l'aide des vapeurs de mercure. On effectuait cette op�ration en pla�ant la plaque dans une bo�te rectangulaire en bois qui se terminait a la partie inf�rieure par une pyramide quadrangulaire tronqu�e, �galement en bois et ferm�e par une petite cuvette en fer dans laquelle on pla�ait le mercure, un thermom�tre plongeait dans le mercure et indiquait la temp�rature de celui-ci. La cuvette en fer �tait chauff�e par une lampe � alcool jusqu a ce que la tem p�rature atteigne 600 C.; on laissait la plaque dans la bo�te jusqu'� ce que la temp�rature du thermom�tre soit redescendue a 450. On pouvait d'ailleurs s'assurer de la venue de l'image en l'examinant au travers d'une glace a la partie sup�rieure de l'appareil. Si le temps de pose avait �t� d�pass�, le d�veloppement se terminait avant que la temp�rature du mercure ne soit descendue a 550.
