This book is an accessible guide to crop tree management, a method of forestry that focuses on increasing the production of specific benefits from a forest, such as timber, wildlife, or aesthetics. The author draws on examples from a demonstration area in West Virginia to illustrate how crop tree management can be used to achieve a variety of goals. The book begins by discussing the history of crop tree management and its place within the broader context of forestry practices. The author then provides a detailed overview of the techniques involved in crop tree management, including how to select and release crop trees, and how to monitor their growth and development. The book concludes with a discussion of the benefits of crop tree management, including its potential to increase timber production, improve wildlife habitat, and enhance the aesthetic value of a forest. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Releasing crop trees means removing neighboring trees whose crowns are interfering with the crown of the crop tree. The intent is to provide growing space all the way around the crop tree crown to encourage accelerated growth. This is done by applying a crown-touching release which essentially removes all trees-(except for other crop trees) whose crowns come in contact with, or touch, the crop tree. In the event of two crop trees occurring close together, it is acceptable to consider their adjoining crowns as one and then release fully around the dual crown.
