What does it really take to run a Great Lakes fishing tournament?
The fish might actually be the easy part.
In Tournament Direction: Behind the Scenes of Running Great Lakes Fishing Tournaments, Steveo Joslin takes readers behind the microphone and into the organized chaos of tournament fishing—from his first experiences as a fourteen-year-old kid fishing the Grand Traverse Salmon Classic to eventually directing some of Lake Michigan’s biggest fishing events.
Along the way came the Wednesday night fishing leagues, the Grand Traverse Salmon Classic, the Benzie Fishing Frenzie, the Uncle Sam Shootout and the Lake Michigan Tournament Trail.
But this isn't a how-to manual.
It's the story of what happens behind the scenes.
Weather calls when there is no perfect answer. Sponsors who take a chance on an event. Volunteers who show up before anyone else and leave after everyone is gone. Rules, payouts, captain's meetings, weigh-ins, giant checks, crazy ideas, mistakes, arguments, victories—and a few ideas that probably never should have worked in the first place.
Steveo shares the lessons learned through years of trial and error, along with the stories and people that shaped his unconventional approach to tournament directing.
Because somewhere along the way, he discovered something surprising:
Running a successful fishing tournament has surprisingly little to do with fish.
The fish are the easy part.
People are harder.
They're also the reason any of it matters.
Funny, candid and unmistakably personal, Tournament Direction is a look at Great Lakes tournament fishing from a perspective most anglers never get to see—the other side of the microphone.
