About this Item
Octavo. 88 leaves. Rebound in quarter red leather over marbled boards. Gilt decorated spine with gold lettering. Gray endpapers. Decorated title page. Work on the laws of ritual slaughter of kosher animals. Written by renowned Rabbi and Rishon le-Zion Hayyim David Hazan (1790-1869), who became Sephardic Chief Rabbi of the Jewish Yishuv in Palestine (more on him: see below). He was a member of the Hazan [sometimes Hazzan] family, an Oriental rabbinical family, probably of Spanish origin. The family name is undoubtedly derived from the office of hazzan [cantor], which one of the ancestors of the family held. There are two illustrations or inserts that provide an external and internal anatomical views of a cow. Cover boards are slightly worn. Interior in good condition. Some worming in margin not affecting text. Printer's marks found on inside t.p. and inside of endpaper. In Hebrew. Good condition. On the author (Source: Jewish Encyclopedia): Hayyim David Hazan: Son of Joseph ben Hayyim Hazan; born at Smyrna Oct. 9, 1790; died at Jerusalem Jan. 17, 1869. He was one of the leading Talmudists of his age. In 1840 he was appointed chief rabbi of Smyrna; in 1855 he went to Jerusalem, where he was made Hakam bashi in 1861. In allusion to his initials, he was called ("without equal in his generation"). He wrote: "Torat ha-Zeba (this work)," on the laws of ritual slaughter (Salonica, 1852; reprinted, Jerusalem, 1883); "Nedib Leb," responsa with other works."Yishre Leb," halakic discussions, with additions by his grandson, Elijah Bekor Hazan (ib. 1870).
