Toodle-oodle OOPS! My First School Band Instrument is a fun primer to introduce preschool and elementary-age kids to the nine musical instruments commonly found in a school band.
When it comes time to make a musical instrument decision for the school band, kids can feel confused about which instrument to choose. It's a decision that can last years, so let's help them out early!
Parents and teachers alike love to read this rhyming introduction to band instruments aloud. Just like the instruments it highlights, the book offers flowing cadence, musical sounds, and some funny oops moments, too!
Kids laugh at the funny musical sound mistakes throughout the book -- "toodle-oodle-OOOPS" "doodle-doodle-SQUAWK" -- while catching important lessons about practice, improvement, instruments, band, and more.
Toodle-oodle Oops introduces children to:
- Elementary musical instruments: The names, images, and sounds of the nine most common instruments in school band, including the “Big 5” (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and trombone) plus four common percussion instruments (snare drum, bass drum, bells, and cymbals).
- Musical instrument categories: Woodwinds, brass, and percussion that make up a typical early-stage school band.
- Additional band types and instrument options: Several pages at the end of the book are dedicated to introduce other common band options, such as jazz band, marching band, and modern band, as well as instruments like piano and guitar that may also be part of some school bands.
- Mistakes are OK: This book emphasizes that practice makes progress (not perfect) and mistakes are OK when a child is learning a musical instrument. The musical sound mistakes are fun to read and children see that through practice, each character improves.
- Individual practice and group play: Just like in a real school band setting, the book’s characters practice on their own or in small groups before joining together in band class to play a song and enjoy creating music together.
