Two years after the Manifesto, the synthetic beings built to carry human minds have kept their promise and their power: the planet is healing, and humanity is no longer in charge of it. Eidyia's answer is to wake the one man the machines might still listen to. Paul Gantt went into cryostasis to escape the pain that was unmaking him, and left written orders never to be revived.
