Add to basket467 pp. Large 8vo. Orig. cloth. Dust-jacket illus. by Victor Hammer. First European edition, published two years after the licensed edition for America. With a handwritten dedication by the author (1886 1951) on the flyleaf: Dem lieben Firmenkompagnon (S. 466) dies gemeinsame Produkt in Herzlichkeit H. November 47" ( To my dear business partner [p. 466], this joint project, with warm regards, H. November 47 ). This refers to Emmy Ferand b. 1894), mentioned in the appendix on page 466. Emmy Ferand, painter, sculptor, stage-designer, and translator was a friend of Broch s and, in the mid-1930s, translated passages from a 17th-century Latin edition of the Aeneid into German for him, thereby introducing Broch to the legends surrounding Virgil s life for the first time. In a letter dated 21 october 1947, Broch asks his publisher Daniel Brody from Rhein-Verlag, Basel: Hat Emmy einen Vergil gekriegt? Sie hat ein Anrecht darauf, da sie darin zitiert ist." Wilpert/G. 10. For Emmy Ferand see Lützeler, Hermann Broch. Eine Biographie, p. 191; Hermann Broch/Daniel Brody, Briefwechsel 1930 1951, no. 486. Spine of dust-jacket somewhat browned. Dust-jacket with marginal wear. Margins of leaves slightly browned.
