If Tilman Riemenschneider had not placed himself on the side of the insurgents as a Würzburg councilor in the peasant war in 1525, his life as a sought-after and wealthy artist would have continued to be glory. But with the defeat of the farmer, he was at the mercy of the prince bishop. Riemenschneider got away with life despite imprisonment, presumed torture and the loss of parts of his fortune, but orders from the 'establishment' he should no longer receive. So he fell into oblivion, and only his tombstone found randomly in 1822 led to a rediscovery of the "master of all masters" as the writer Max von der Grün calls him. The biography portrays his life and work as well as the aftereffects of his art
