About this Item
6" x 7 3/4", 8 pp. + 3 plates, wraps. Rare early 'oil colors' McLoughlin children's title from 1869 [no date but known to be this year]. Part of the 'Natural History Series'. Cover banner states 'Printed in Oil Colors' as McLoughlin had introduced a then high-tech photographic process into printing by applying oil colors directly to zinc plates - a revolutionary practice at that time. The 3 plates and cover illustration have a special brilliance, different than the chromolithography McLoughlin and others would use years later. The plates (3) are in perfect condition and depict a tiger, leopard and jaguar. Overall the book is in Very Good condition with a rather nice front cover (see photo enlarged), only minor and scattered age-toning, a few spots of foxing, an unusual white residue at the top 1/8" of the inside front cover, and a back cover with some surface loss, blemishes/soiling, and, at the spine heel, a 1/2" closed tear and a small chip on that corner. Also, the bottom 1 1/2" of the spine is split but the other 6" is fine and holding the signature of pages. No writing or other marks. Sold with a clear acetate cover with white spine which makes handling and viewing far safer. Will be shipped securely between cardboard. Seller Inventory # 04421
