What if character and structure aren't two separate problems — but one living system?
After years of producing, writing, directing, and teaching, Hollywood producer Don Handfield discovered a pattern hiding in plain sight across hundreds of films: the most powerful stories don't just follow a hero — they operate simultaneously on three levels. The personal. The relational. The societal. ME. WE. WORLD.
The Three Ring Method reveals how these three dimensions interlock to create the emotional architecture audiences crave — and gives you a practical, scalable framework for building stories that captivate from page one to final frame.
This isn't another beat sheet or formula. It's a map of how stories actually mirror the structure of human consciousness — and why understanding that architecture will make you a fundamentally better writer.
What you'll learn:
The Foundations — How the ME, WE, and WORLD rings form the DNA of every character, relationship, and story world. Why the "Sacred Order" of transformation (face fear → heal wound → claim gift) creates narratives that feel both surprising and inevitable.
Ring Placement — How the same character elements create completely different heroes depending on where you place them. Why Captain America, Han Solo, Walter White, and Batman are all built from the same three rings — just configured differently.
The Transformation — The complete arc from Breaking to Eclipse to Mending to New Dawn. How to guide your characters through authentic darkness and back into light — across all three rings simultaneously.
Advanced Tools — How to engineer twists that ripple across all three rings (with deep breakdowns of The Sixth Sense, Get Out, Planet of the Apes, and more). Full-circle analysis of Casablanca, Barbie, Get Out, and The Sixth Sense.
Worksheets & Exercises — Character development worksheets, supporting character templates, world-building exercises, genre analysis tools, and twist-design frameworks — all classroom-tested.
Handfield has produced films including The Founder (starring Michael Keaton) and written and directed Touchback (starring Kurt Russell). He co-created the television series Knightfall and authored the comic series The Rift, adapted by Steven Spielberg. He has taught screenwriting and story at UCLA, Chapman University, and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts.
Whether you write screenplays, novels, television, comics, or video games — The Three Ring Method gives you a framework that works across every medium and genre. Your characters will be deeper. Your structure will be organic. Your stories will move people.
Course Edition — includes all worksheets and exercises used in Don Handfield's university writing courses.
