About this Item

Contemporary wooden boards with pig-skin spine and with an intact brass clasp. Covering material removed from boards, worming on the boards, body of the book a little worm-holed throughout, edges slightly water-stained, some marginal notes, endpapers and 6 preliminary leaves with notes in old hand.

1. VOCABULARIUS GEMMA GEMMARU(M) noviter impressus, additioneq(ue) multarum dictionum exornatus. Strassburg: Renatus Beck, 1511. 152 leaves. With figurative woodcut title border by Hans Baldung Grien. 2 leaves = v3 and v4 with piece torn away from bottom corner, but no loss of text. One of the earliest Latin-German dictionaries.

2. Vocabulari(us). Vocum qu(a)e in opere grammatico plurimorum continentur, brevis & vera interpretatio. Strassburg: J. Preus, 1509. 6 ff., 109 numbered leaves, 3 ff. With woodcut printer's device at the end. Johannes Altenstaig, a student of the Humanist Heinrich Bebel, incorporated theology, philology, philosophy, poetry and rhetoric into his scientific work. He befriended many humanists and theologians. The Vocabularius (first published in 1508) is regarded as his major work: not an alphabetical dictionary but rather a compendium of Latin words according to grammatical categories.

3. (Torrentinus, hermann) Elucidarius carminu(m) et historiaru(m). Vel Vocabularius poeticus co(n)tine(n)s fabulas, historias, provincias, urbes, insulas, fluvios, et monted illustres. Hagenau: H. Gran fuer J. Rynman, 1510. 60 leaves. - An encyclopedia of mythological and geographical names as an "aid for the understanding of Roman classical authors". First published in 1497, this book was reprinted many times well into the 17th century.
