The Turtle and the Rabbit
Some animals had gathered in a forest's open space to talk, to eat, and play chase.
The birds were flying high, and the snakes were sliding low. The porcupines were crawling, and the ants marched in a row. The frogs and the lizards were resting in the sun. The possums, the squirrels, and the turtles were having fun.
Hopping in came a rabbit, petting gently his long whiskers, making fun of porcupines, and laughing at the crickets. "Look how smooth my gray fur is, and my feet are very quick. I am the fastest of you all. If you dare, let us compete."
A wise turtle then replied, "My furry rabbit, please don't brag. It doesn't matter how fast but to finish what you start."
But the rabbit said with pride, "I dare you to compete! Which one of you feels brave to outrun me on my feet?"
The wise turtle stepped in front. "I will take you up on that." The rabbit said, "Are you kidding? You're the slowest by far."
"Let's find out who goes first at that distant leafy tree. Let some birds fly there so our judges they can be."
Everybody took their place. They counted out to three. The turtle and the rabbit started running for the tree.
The rabbit started out laughing; he ran quickly more than half. Then he stopped and saw the turtle crawling slowly way, way back.
"The turtle is so far behind me! I run so fast. I'm almost through. Let me stop for a while and enjoy the pleasant view."
Then he saw a field of clover oh so tender and so sweet. He started eating and ate so much that he felt full and fell asleep.
On the other hand, the turtle was crawling all along. He did not stop, not for a moment, even to see what was going on.
