Great Expectations is a classic Bildungsroman by Charles Dickens, first published in serial form from 1860 to 1861. It tells the story of Pip, an orphan boy, and his journey from humble beginnings in the Kent marshes to his life as a gentleman. Pip's life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a large inheritance from an anonymous benefactor, leading him to believe that he is destined for greatness. Set against the backdrop of Victorian England, Great Expectations explores themes of social class, ambition, and the corrupting influence of wealth. Pip's relationships, particularly with the eccentric Miss Havisham and the beautiful but cold Estella, shape his understanding of love and society. As Pip pursues his dreams, he confronts the harsh realities of the world and learns valuable lessons about loyalty, redemption, and the true meaning of success. Dickens's masterful storytelling and memorable characters make Great Expectations a timeless tale that continues to resonate with readers today. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
