Print on Demand. This book responds to a series of claims of unorthodoxy made by a fellow reverend against the author. These claims stem from the author’s rejection of the concept of the Trinity, and his belief that Jesus was not divine but a God-created being. The author uses his response as an opportunity to explore the history of the concept of the Trinity, engaging with the concept of Arianism in particular, and arguing that his views do not stray from traditional Christian beliefs, as some have claimed. The book is a fascinating exploration of Christian doctrine, written with an eye toward recovering the orthodoxy of the early church through a careful and challenging re-examination of core ideas. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.

This volume presents a detailed reply to a controversial 1815 letter about Trinitarian theology. It frames disagreements with candor and aims to defend limits of personal attack while stressing fidelity to Christian truth. The text discusses atonement, the nature of Christ and the Holy Spirit, and how these ideas interact with church authority and discipline.
Readers gain access to a window into early American theological arguments, including how ministers debated Christology, the role of human reasoning in faith, and the relationship between church governance and scripture. The edition highlights the Cambridge Platform and Congregationalist principles, contrasting them with Presbyterian structures.
- Clear argumentation about key questions of Christ’s nature, the atonement, and the Spirit.
- Discussion of church leadership, elders, and the rights of congregations to govern themselves.
- Context for historical religious disputes and how writers sought to clarify doctrine with civility.
- Line-by-line examination of claims, with a focus on truth, charity, and accountability.
Ideal for readers of religious history, 18th–19th century theology, and those interested in how early American churches navigated doctrine and governance.
