Paperback. Fourteen centuries. Zero preparation. One cold cup of tea.On a Tuesday afternoon, Lucas is stuck in a rut, between odd jobs, and not really watching a nature documentary about migratory patterns. Then, the world liquefies. Suddenly, he's threatened by the Cardinal's Guards in 1643 Paris, dodging runaway horses on a chaotic London street, and standing directly in the path of a Roman disaster.Lucas did not choose the time-travel life. He doesn't have a manual, a destination, or any obvious way home. What he does have is a hoodie, a pair of worn trainers, and a slowly dawning suspicion that the small clicking sound he heard before reality dissolved might have been his little sister playing with something she shouldn't have been playing with. From a debate contest with Vikings to a dance demonstration in the Pacific, history is a series of rooms Lucas cannot stop walking into. Some of the people in those rooms try to kill him. Some feed him stew. One, during a vibrant carnival, treats him like a real person for the first time in centuries. And somewhere across the slipstream, a mysterious man in a faded baseball cap keeps appearing at the edge of crowds, dropping cryptic hints about an artifact called the orb.Lucas just wants to get home, drink his cold tea, and never complain about anything ordinary ever again. But surviving the chaos of history is one thing. Taking control of it is another. This is for readers who like their time travel funny, their historical settings actually inhabited, and their unwilling heroes equipped with nothing more than a hoodie and a working sense of irony. On a profoundly average Tuesday, Lucas is sitting on his couch, ignoring a nature documentary, and waiting for his tea to cool down.
Then reality snaps like a cheap elastic band.
Seconds later, he's cornered by seventeenth-century French guards with very sharp rapiers, narrowly avoiding a trampling in Victorian London, and trying not to get incinerated in ancient Rome. He has no mission or manual or historical expertise. Just a hoodie, beat-up trainers, and a horrible suspicion that the faint click he heard right before the universe melted was his little sister messing with something in the spare room.
Hurled through centuries with zero control, Lucas survives on pure panic and dry sarcasm. Some eras try to execute him, some feed him stew, and in eighteenth-century Venice, someone actually looks at him like he belongs. But across every era, the same quiet figure in a faded baseball cap keeps watching him from the crowds, dropping hints about an artifact that might just be a ticket home.
Lucas doesn't care about destiny. He just wants to sit back on his sofa and drink his tea. But to get back, he'll have to stop stumbling through history, and figure out how to drive it.
