What if something is not impossible simply because it has never happened before?
We often make decisions about our lives using evidence from the past. We look at what has been done, what has failed, what people around us believe, what society considers realistic and what our own experiences have taught us. Slowly, without realising it, we begin to confuse what has never happened with what cannot happen. A lack of precedent becomes a limitation. An unfamiliar path becomes a foolish one. Fear begins to sound like reason, and uncertainty begins to feel like proof.
Not Yet: The Things We Mistake for Impossible explores the space between possibility and impossibility, between what we know and what we have never tested. It asks us to examine one of the quietest forces shaping human life: our tendency to close questions before reality has answered them.
This is not a book that promises that every dream can come true. It does not suggest that effort can overcome every limitation or that persistence guarantees success. Some things are genuinely impossible. Some possibilities become unavailable with time. Some dreams should be released, and some doors should remain closed. The wisdom lies in knowing the difference.
The phrase “not yet” offers something more honest than blind optimism. It does not promise success. It simply refuses to turn uncertainty into a premature conclusion. It allows us to say that we do not know yet, that the evidence does not exist yet, that the conditions are not ready yet or that perhaps someone has not tried yet.
Through reflections on fear, precedent, social judgement, permission, familiarity, readiness, inherited limitations, imagination, failure, evidence, acceptance and personal transformation, this book explores why we so often limit ourselves before reality requires us to. It looks at the psychological comfort of believing that the future must resemble the past and the hidden cost of living according to possibilities defined by other people.
At the heart of the book is the idea that every established possibility was once unfamiliar. Every path that now looks obvious had a beginning when nobody knew whether it would work. Every first attempt existed before there was evidence to support it. Someone had to begin before the world could point to an example.
But being the first does not mean believing that everything will work. It means being willing to discover what is true. Sometimes the attempt creates evidence that a possibility exists. Sometimes it reveals a better way. Sometimes it proves that the original idea was wrong. Sometimes it teaches us when to stop. In each case, reality becomes clearer because someone was willing to meet it.
The book also turns inward. Not every possibility we have abandoned should be recovered, and not every possibility should be pursued. Some belong to an earlier version of ourselves. Some were created by comparison, expectation or the desire for approval. Some need to be released so that something more meaningful can have space to grow.
Eventually, the question becomes personal. Who could we still become if we stopped treating our past as a permanent verdict? What parts of ourselves remain undeveloped because they have never been given enough opportunity? What might change if we stopped waiting for certainty and began creating evidence through small, honest actions?
Not Yet is ultimately a book about possibility, but it is also a book about judgement. It asks us to become more careful about the conclusions we make about ourselves, other people and the future. It reminds us that possibility is not certainty, and uncertainty is not impossibility.
Some things will never happen.
Some things should never happen.
Some things are waiting for the right conditions.
And some things remain unknown simply because nobody has attempted them yet.
