A Practical Guide for Dogs Who Care for Their Humans
What if dogs have been therapists long before humans invented therapy?
This book is not written about dogs.
It is written for them.
The Therapist Dog is a practical, embodied guide addressed directly to dogs who accompany humans through agitation, anxiety, impulsivity, fatigue, and emotional overload. It starts from a simple, respectful observation: dogs already practice a refined form of emotional regulation every day—without theory, without technique, without effort.
They stay when humans rush.
They wait when humans hesitate.
They influence without forcing.
They regulate without exhausting themselves.
This guide does not attempt to teach dogs what they already know by instinct. Instead, it makes their implicit wisdom readable, helping therapist dogs refine their posture, rhythm, presence, and relational clarity—without adding pressure or performance.
Throughout the book, the dog is not treated as a tool, an assistant, or a behavioral technician. The dog is recognized as a relational guide, a stabilizing presence, a quiet reference point in a noisy world.
A philosophy of mush: walking the path togetherThe book introduces the concept of mush, derived from the French marche (“walk”), used in dog sledding to signal forward movement. In this guide, mush becomes a philosophy:
to move forward without pulling,
to guide without pushing,
to open the path by already being there.
Like the lead dog in a sled team, the therapist dog does not force the movement. It sets the rhythm. Others follow because the direction is clear and safe.
What this guide offers• Emotional co-regulation through posture, rhythm, and presence
• Silent listening and non-verbal influence
• Managing human impulsivity (“the Zen of the biscuit”)
• Using stillness, walking, play, and rest as regulatory tools
• Knowing when to stay close—and when distance is care
• Becoming a stable emotional pillar of the household
• Leadership without dominance
• Convincing through constancy and example
• Supporting over time without burning out
Each chapter is written in the second person, speaking directly to the dog, in a calm, respectful tone that mirrors the very presence the book describes.
A guide dogs actually appreciateSeveral dogs consulted during the writing of this guide have shown clear signs of approval:
long sighs, relaxed postures, attentive stillness, and the unmistakable look of recognition that says, “Yes. That’s what I already do.”
This book is both practical and contemplative, grounded in psychology, emotional regulation, and relational science—yet never heavy, never technical, never directive.
Who this book is for• Therapy dogs
• Companion dogs who emotionally support their humans
• Humans who are ready to be guided quietly
• Readers interested in emotional regulation, hypnosis, embodiment, and non-verbal leadership
• Anyone who believes calm is transmitted, not commanded
This is not a manual of techniques.
It is a path.
The book ends without instructions, without assignments, without pressure. Because the most important work is already happening—every time a dog stays, breathes, waits, and walks beside a human.
The guide ends.
The relationship continues.
Quietly.
