Complete with the engraved frontispiece First published in 1661 this volume is the fourth edition overall and the first expanded edition. Called Derden Druk, on the printed title, as this is the third edition based on the 1681 van Royen and ten Hoorn edition. This important newly expanded Dutch Third Edition includes an opening poem Op de nieuwie druk der beroemde werken van den heere Kenelmus Digby , which translates to On the new edition of the famous works of Mr. Kenelmus Digby . This work would bring together Digby s Choice Receipts and his Powder of Sympathy, excerpts by N. Papinius and a major work by Athanasius Kircher on magnetic forces and the influence of the moon, sun and planets on the earth. The Powder of Sympathy was a form of sympathetic magic popular in 17th Century Europe, whereby a remedy was applied to the weapon that had caused a wound in the hope of healing the injury it had made. The method was first proposed by Rudolf Goclenius, Jr. and was later expanded upon by Sir Kenelm Digby in the present discourse. Digby s publication went through at least 29 editions in French, English, Latin, Dutch and German. After Digby s death, three major collections of his medical, culinary and chemical recipes were issued by George Hartman, who is variously described as Digby s steward or operator (lab assistant). His compilations from Digby s papers have been traditionally assigned to Digby, although he is not strictly the author. The compilations actually consist of Digby s recipes, those he got from his friends and associates and ones Hartman added. This Third Dutch Edition published many of these recipes in the final section of the book. Bound in contemporary vellum. A wrap around spine with five cords showing. The bottom front cord broken with no cracking. Internally the binding was coming away from the vellum wrap until new endpapers tightened things up, but it is still somewhat loose. Internally the engraved frontispiece with Japanese tissue paper guarding on the inside edge. Light water staining, especially in the front section. Good to Very good of a rare title. The volume measures 16.5 x 10.5 x 4 cm. Each leaf measures 160 x 96 mm. Rubib / Huston 72, Worldcat lists 8 locations worldwide. Seller Inventory # ABE-1628518035348
