Operations, Safety, Cost and Risk includes the integration of show technology into a venue, audience safety and beating technology noise. Detailed advice on disabled access for all to theatres is given, together with explanations of sustainableventilation systems for auditoria. Backstage operations and staffing in three major theatres are described and the difficulties involved in both project management and risk management of arts construction projects are explored. Finally the reasons forthe high cost of theatres and performing arts venues are examined in detail by both a UK and an American cost consultant. These three books set out the knowledge and experience of over 90 people involved in the planning, design, equipping and managementof theatres, performing arts centres and similar venues worldwide. Complied by Richard Brett from papers and images presented at the 2002 Conference, including a number of additional pictures and diagrams, they provide a unique insight into the problemsand solutions of building for the performing arts. As Timothy West said at the launch of the books, "Over the last half-century the hitherto largely unquestioned mystery of theatre design has been addressed, and a science learned and developed by thevery distinguished practitioners whose knowledge has been combined to make these three fascinating and valuable books."The 3 volumes all go under the overall title "Theatre Engineering and Architecture" and are:Volume 1 - Engineering and Technology -Foreword by Richard BrettVolume 2 - Architecture and Planning - Foreword by Iain MackintoshVolume 3 - Operations, Safety, Cost and Risk - Foreword by David Wilmore. All are A4 format and with full colour illustrations and graphics.
