Item description from seller

Teubner, Leipzig, 1962. XVI,82p. Original cloth. Series: Bibliotheca Teubneriana. Nice copy. (Rare). 'Hermagoras, of Temnos (fl. c. 150 BC), the most influential teacher of rhetoric of his time, author of an elaborate system which we know in fair detail from later writers, especially Cicero, Quintilian, and Hermogenes (of Tarsus). His most important work was on 'invention'; he did little for the theory of style. By discussing not only themes involving particular situations, but also general theses (.) he helped to extend the scope of rhetorical education to cover moral and philosophical subjects. His complex and sublte classification of 'types of issue' was decisive for later theory, and it is for which he was chiefly remembered.' (DONALD ANDREW F.M. RUSSELL in The Oxford Classical Dictionary, 3rd rev.ed. 2003, p.689). 'The present volume now makes available the relevant ancient texts, with a very brief outline of Hermagoras' system (pp.IV-IX), a generous bibliography (XI-XVI), an index loco rum, Greek and Latin indices rerum, and an index nominum.' (PHILLIP de LACY in Classical Philology, 59, 1964, p.68).…

Scrinium Classical Antiquity, member of the Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (NVvA - ILAB), stands for a specialized stock of new, secondhand and antiquarian books about Classical Antiquity. The main theme of our books is Classical Antiquity: texts and commentaries, translations, archeology, philosophy, travel, history, mythology, books for young people, philology, law, reception of classical motives in Middle Ages, Renaissance and our own time and neo-Hellenika (conptemporary Greece), and many more subjects. A more modest quantity of our books concerns countries, civilisations and religious movements on the edges of the classical world: e.g. Egypt, Middle East and Early Christianity.…
