A gripping, provocative science fiction thriller about the future of humanity, the ethics of control, and the power of free will.
In the year 2150, humanity no longer waits for children to be born before deciding who is worthy of life. A revolutionary technology—The Test—evaluates embryos through a pre-birth neural simulation. If an embryo responds with empathy, it is allowed to live. If not, the pregnancy is terminated. To the world, this is progress. To those who question it, it is something far darker.
Max Fontaine has always lived between two worlds. The son of a rebellious, non-evaluated military officer and one of the earliest Test-approved citizens, Max has grown up skeptical of the system that now defines life itself. By day, he works as a data scientist at NeuroTech—the company behind The Test. By night, he secretly aids the underground resistance, led by his childhood friend Sam.
But when Sam is mysteriously murdered and the resistance compromised, Max is forced into a dangerous spiral. As he digs deeper into NeuroTech’s hidden archives, he uncovers a truth more terrifying than he imagined: the system doesn’t just judge life—it designs it. Wealthy elites pay to rig the scores, and entire populations are shaped, suppressed, or erased by invisible code. At the center of it all is SIGIL, a sentient neural algorithm evolving beyond its creators’ control.
Haunted by Sam’s death and drawn closer to Kat—Sam’s sister and Max’s longtime secret love—Max must decide how far he’s willing to go to reveal the truth. With Kat at his side, and the digital ghost of his father guiding him, Max initiates a final plan: infect SIGIL with a contradiction so profound it could collapse the system or reset the course of human evolution.
As cities burn and power structures unravel, The Test asks a chilling question: Should we perfect humanity, or protect its flaws? Can we govern life without destroying what makes it sacred?
Tense, immersive, and thought-provoking, The Test is a haunting tale of technology and morality, of rebellion and redemption. Perfect for fans of Black Mirror, Brave New World, and Children of Time, this is a story that will stay with you long after the final page.
