Bowv has earned his place beneath a noose. A bandit of legendary brutality, he has reduced villages to smoldering ash, turned city streets into rivers of blood, kidnapped nobles for sport, and put kings in the ground. Every crime, every atrocity, every act of savagery has been building toward one final appointment with an executioner. But the world is not finished with him yet, and neither are the gods.

When war breaks out, a king he betrayed is calling on him to defend his kingdom, which Bowv was once destined to inherit. The threat they face is unlike anything either man has prepared for: vampires, creatures the world believed annihilated millennia ago. Bowv stopped believing in monsters long ago, but the vampiric corpse he stumbles upon has him rethinking his beliefs.

The gods are another matter entirely. The death of his mother, the horrors of war, and the cruelty of a king he once served stripped away Bowv's faith years ago. He rebuilt himself on a single, iron conviction: there are no gods. Now, he finds himself wielding a divine sword, and the truths he spent a lifetime refusing are closing in around him. Will Bowv embrace the gods he forsook, or will he cling to his cynicism and watch as the kingdom bleeds out and vampires upset the cosmic order?
