The Temptation of Structuralism Discourse is a reflective and critical exploration of the rise, spread, and cultural impact of structuralism within modern Arab literary criticism. Rather than presenting a purely theoretical manual, Hussein Mohammed Bafaqih traces the intellectual journey of structuralism as it moved from European philosophical roots into Arab academic and cultural circles.
The book examines how structuralism captivated critics, writers, and institutions, shaping debates in literature, language, and interpretation. It highlights the enthusiasm, misunderstandings, and transformations that accompanied its adoption, offering a nuanced narrative of its influence beyond rigid methodology.
Through historical anecdotes, critical reflections, and cultural analysis, the author reveals how ideas evolve when they travel across languages and contexts. The work also situates structuralism alongside related movements such as post-structuralism and deconstruction, emphasizing their social and intellectual resonance.
This book is valuable for readers interested in literary theory, Arabic criticism, intellectual history, and the sociology of ideas. It bridges philosophy, literature, and cultural studies, making it both an analytical study and a narrative of intellectual fascination.
