Add to basketPaperback. "You fancy me mad. Madmen know nothing." Fancy is one of 333 words defined in this edition. Poe wrote these eight stories and poems across the 1840s with a vocabulary that rewards attention, and a reader who skims past sagacious, pestilence, or impunity loses part of what makes the sentences work. This Middle School Vocabulary Anthology gives you all eight works complete, with every one of those words defined on the page where it appears. What's inside. The full, unabridged text of eight works: The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, The Black Cat, Annabel Lee, The Masque of the Red Death, The Cask of Amontillado, The Oval Portrait, and Lenore. Every vocabulary word is bolded in the text and footnoted the first time it appears, defined in the sense the author uses it, not an exhaustive dictionary entry. Words like quaint, countenance, grotesque, connoisseur, tremulous, and arabesque are there, and 327 more. A complete alphabetical glossary at the back lets you find any word again after you have finished reading. What's not inside. No plot summary. No page-cluttering commentary. No chapter questions to grind through. Just Poe as he wrote, with the vocabulary handled so nothing slows you down. Two editions: how to choose. If you already own these stories and want the vocabulary alone, six of the eight works have their own Honors Vocabulary Companion: definitions only, built to sit beside any edition you already own. If you want the works and the definitions together, with every word footnoted on the page where it appears, this is the edition to buy. Who it's for. Middle school readers moving into harder texts. Honors English students. ESL and EFL learners. Homeschool families and classroom teachers. And anyone who wants to read Poe with nothing lost. Part of the Vocabulary Anthologies series: the vocabulary of the classics. Start here, where the heart beats loudest. This item is printed on demand. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
