From the Author
This book is written for people in business who want to improve the value, profitability, and growth of their firms. Whether you are chief executive, senior executive, or junior executive; scientist or technologist or engineer; CFO or accountant; sales force member or service personnel; manager, planner or marketer; long-tenured or new entrant; board member or consultant; at headquarters or a branch sales office; this book gives you tools you can use.
This book describes how to apply technology to your business to make your products, services and business more valuable. It's about working with more people outside your firm. It's about selling into new markets, and inventing new products, and making what you sell unusual and really valuable to people who buy from you. And it's about getting your newly valuable products to the right people quickly and profitably.
This book has ideas every single person in every firm can use today to think up more valuable things to do. Whether your firm makes toothpaste or token ring routers, fiber optics or fiber additives, semiconductor chips or potato chips, chemicals or commercials, hematocrit readers or helpline monitors, instruments or ornaments, copiers or combines, kitty litter or catalysts, this book has tips and techniques to use so you can offer more valuable products to more customers and get more for them. We give you ways to choose just the best ideas, so you can concentrate on them.
Ours is a big economy in an even bigger world, and there are lots of markets and lots of needs and lots of new ideas for things to do. Your company or division or group or startup needs your ideas, and your interest and your curiosity, more than ever before. This book puts your ideas into a framework for profitable growth. And profitable growth is the strength in this globe-circling economy.
In just ten chapters, we talk about things you can do to improve the growth of your company. This is an area where everyone can contribute. In the new competitive environment we describe, everyone must contribute. When we talk about using technology to improve our businesses, we are talking about using ideas and turning them into products. This book is based on twenty years of thinking through better ways to do things, but this is not a theoretical book. It's a book about practical things to do and get a lot out of. It's about your lists of "Things to Get Done Today" and "People to Call".
