Thus, this work is an extension of Isodyne Stress Analysis and complementary to it. Consequently, only a short outline of the theory ofisodynes is given in Chapter 2. Only the basic concepts and relations are presented to provide the link between the underlying analytical and optical theories and the experimental techniques. One of the major purposes of a preface is to formulate and explain the chosen frame of reference in a condensed form, even when some components of it are discussed in the text. A main issue of the underlying frame of reference pertains to the roles of the abstract thinking and of the observation in cognition of reality.

Synopsis

This book presents both an overview and the practical details of three-dimensional techniques of isodyne stress analysis, in a manner compatible with modern theory of experimentation. This includes basic relations regarding information flow through the isodyne recorder, and technical details of the components of the measurement system, and of the evaluation procedures. Thus the book presents characteristic data on all components of the measurement system and procedures which are needed to assure reliability of measurements and testability of evaluated results: lasers, optical systems, polarizing optics, mechanical and birefringence spectral responses of materials for stress analysis specimens, chemical photography, electronic photography, manual and electronic evaluation procedures of isodyne recordings, testing of reliability and accuracy of evaluated stresses, and assessment of errors caused by the common two-dimensional approximations.
