Item description from seller

Illustrated with 46 tipped-in plates, plus a gallery of miscellaneous drawing studies. Original blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Spine ends and corners are frayed and exposed, but interior is in very good condition with no marking. A former owner has attached the image from the original dust-jacket, a self-portrait of the author, to the flyleaf. Pages are tanned, with very light foxing. This book is intended to teach pencil drawing as a fundamental skill to precede painting, etching, or other fine-art forms. Topics include the correct method of holding and cutting the pencil, drawing values and outline, individuality or mode of expression, shading, outdoor sketching, figure drawing from the nude, quick poses, observations on proportions of the figure, and more. Hardcover, very good condition. 42 pages, plus 46 plates and 24 gallery pages, quarto.
