- Book 4 of 15: Teaching Complex Sentence Writing Using Children's Books
You know this — you hear them during class discussions. Their thinking is rich, detailed, and thoughtful.
But then you ask them to write. And those rich, layered thoughts? Gone. Replaced by short, stiff sentences that barely scratch the surface of what they actually understand.
This isn’t a comprehension or motivation issue. Many students have the ideas—they just need help learning how to get those ideas onto the page.
Students do not need more random writing prompts. They need clear, repeated practice building sentences that carry meaning—connecting ideas, showing relationships, and expressing cause, contrast, and result. When students are taught how to write these sentences, writing stops being a mystery and starts being the natural extension of what they already think and say.
What's Inside:
- Sentence-writing activities specifically tailored to award-winning and well-respected children's books — allowing you to build writing skills while simultaneously building students' knowledge
- Every activity includes fully written prompts and sample responses — so you can model strong writing without creating examples from scratch
- Structures repeat across multiple book titles — providing students the focused practice they need so the mechanics become second nature and students can focus on what they want to say, not how to say it
- Approximately twelve activity types per children's book title — from Because-But-So Statements and Incorporating Dependent Clauses to Combine Sentences and Sentence Elaboration, building increasingly sophisticated writing across the year
Instead of using disconnected worksheets or random prompts, students practice sentence writing in the context of books worth reading.
Featuring activities based on the following 19 children’s books (each sold separately or check them out at the library):
Abe Lincoln: The Boy Who Loved Books by Kay Winters
Bats at the Library by Brian Lies
Born to Read by Judy Sierra
The Boy Who Was Raised by Librarians by Carla Morris
The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers
The Librarian of Basra: A True Story from Iraq by Jeanette Winter
The Library by Sarah Stewart
Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen
Library Mouse by Daniel Kirk
Miss Brooks Loves Books (and I Don’t) by Barbara Bottner
My Librarian Is a Camel: How Books Are Brought to Children Around the World by Margriet Ruurs
The Oldest Student: How Mary Walker Learned to Read by Rita Lorraine Hubbard
Poppleton by Cynthia Rylant
Rain School by James Rumford
The Right Word: Roget and His Thesaurus by Jen Bryant
Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco
That Book Woman by Heather Henson
Tomás and the Library Lady by Pat Mora
Waiting for the Biblioburro by Monica Brown
Everything fits within the teaching you're already doing. No new program. No extra planning. Just practical routines that work inside your existing read-aloud time — and build strong writing skills along the way.
Great thinking deserves strong sentences.
