In addition to outlining recent advances in teaching and assessing writing, White explains how teachers can design better writing assignments, help students write more effectively, and respond more constructively to student writing. White includes a full discussion of the three most popular methods of assessing writing - multiple-choice tests, essay tests, and writing portfolios. And he covers new material, such as guidance on portfolio assessment; theories of reading and how they affect teachers' response to writing; program evaluation; and the development of writing assignments as a central aspect of teaching.
